The Eastern Cape Department of Human Settlements has granted Chris Hani District Municipality Developer Status for the replacement of temporal shelters by permanent structures in the district. There is currently a backlog of approximately 1300 disaster houses to be developed, 427 of which have been approved for implementation.
Eleven emerging contractors have already been appointed for the construction of some houses in this programme and an additional ten emerging contractors are to still be appointed.
As a result of the above, the foremost determination for Chris Hani District Municipality is to appoint a Civil/Structural Consultant Engineers that will oversee the inspection of founding conditions when excavated, certification of ground floor Reinforced Concrete slabs constructed by the emerging contractor; inspection and certification of brick/block structures; inspection and certification of roof structures; preparation of payment certificates for contractors and construction supervision.
